Reed roof process of coating consists of 60-70 cm-scale layout of bundles, spreading out them on the battening and smoothing to provide the desired shape. Reeds are fixed with 3-6 mm thickness galvanized wire, which is screwed with special twisted screws (with stainless steel wire).
Reed roofs durability is directly dependent on the roof slope. As bigger roof slope then roof lives longer. Recommended minimum slope of reeds roof is 35 degrees. Correctly covered reed roof will serve for many decades. The direct influence of the reed roof consumables duration has: home geographical location, climate, slope of a roof quality of the materials and same roof coating process, master craftsmen.
Straw roof process of coating remains the same as the reeds. It just has some different details. Straw are more plasticity then reeds and it allow to made more details of decorations if it is relevant for you. But reeds can give you feel of biggest massiveness.
Thatched roof longevity depends on several factors:
– Roof slope of 45-50 degrees, the windows of 35-40 degrees;
– Straw has be no less than 110-120 cm;
Thermal resistance of straw: substance density kg / m3 150 coefficient of thermal conductivity W / mK = 0.09. For straw roof not need additional inner side of the decorating, rainwater pipes and heat isolation. If we want we can calculate 1 sq.m. of roof from other material we can see that thatched roof is not so expansive (roof covering + thermal insulation work + decoration + paints + painting + rainwater pipes and ..).
Reeds are strong because in contain are components of wax also on the underside of the mast is silica which increase on time maturation. It is doing thickened and strengthened walls of cane. This condition has high influence for change of weather tight integrity and also increases resistance to fire. A single sheet of paper is easy to ignite but a book or a series of compressed paper is difficult.
One square meter of reed roof (30 cm thick) weighing about 30 35 kg + amount of rainfall.
Using a standard thatched roof (about 30 cm thick) rain can slip in reeds no more 5 – 6 cm. Reeds are laid that the water would flow down through ends of reed. As a result at the end of precipitation surface dries very quickly. Reeds and straw has the lowest thermal conductivity, coefficient of resistance is 0,045.
after lay the reeds, the roof can be additionally covered with fireproof impregnant that protects the roof from moss and fire. Impregnant can be eco-friendly, harmless to humans and the environment. Also, after coating of reeds covering is recommended to put fire protection sheet.
